E Oreste e Thea partecipano attivamente alle iniziative NO TAV e No Terzo Valico fino almeno al 2018.
Tutti a processo.

Telling the story of Oreste Strano is no easy task. We are not dealing with a comrade defined by a single field of interest or practice, but rather by a single goal: change, and the struggles necessary to bring it about. Oreste was hard to contain, always ready for new experiences with irony and creativity. But let us take things in order: politically, Oreste started out in the PC m-l (Marxist-Leninist Communist Party), and knowing him over the years, no political placement ever seemed stranger for him. He married Brunhilde, and in 1974 their daughter Barbara was born. It was during those years that Oreste grew close to Autonomia and Rosso, and I knew him only fleetingly because he was not in my circle—that of the Workers' Political Collectives (Collettivi Politici Operai).
I met him again in San Vittore prison (Milan Judicial Prison) during his third arrest. He had come from Rebibbia, having been transferred there from Trani following the revolt in that High-Security prison. He arrived in Milan for the Rosso-Tobagi trial, and we shared a cell for that entire long period. A deep bond formed between us—political affinity, mutual respect, and shared daily life. Together, we launched a political prisoners' electoral list, Vivere Liberazione, d'ogni carcere l'estinzione (Living Liberation, the Abolition of Every Prison), which ran in Milan in the 1983 elections for the Milan-Pavia constituency. With the help of comrades outside the prison, we built a major grassroots campaign using only flyers, self-produced posters, graffiti, stalls at events, and even a small newsletter. To register the list, those on the outside managed to gather signatures authenticated by court clerks. A notary entered the prison to collect the candidates' details—a sort of provocation-party was created that ran in the election and, in the height of an era of arrests and repression, gathered over 5,000 votes in Milan.
Across Italian prisons, the initiative sparked the interest of thousands of inmates who joined the movement to denounce harsh prison conditions and organized protests to draw public attention—the most iconic being the synchronized banging on cell bars.
Once released at the end of his sentence, he was sent into internal exile (confino) in Patti. The intent was obvious: to drain the water where the fish swims. But for Oreste, water was everywhere. In Patti, he made new friends who would remain close for decades. He discovered Brassica—a wild, primordial cabbage, the mother of all cabbages, possessing exceptional healing and restorative properties and the unique ability to survive on saltwater. Thus, the Association for the Utilization of Brassica was born in Patti. Its ability to thrive on saltwater rendered it suitable even for land far removed from fresh water sources. When his exile ended, he returned first to Milan to live with Thea, who - after his relationship with Bruni had ended - had been his partner since before his arrest in dicember 1979 for 7 aprile and Rosso-Tobagi.. They stayed in Milan until 1993. That year, Oreste and Thea got married, and Cristina and I were their wedding witnesses. The four of us had already been close for years, bound by shared experiences: for Oreste and me, our time in prison; for Thea and Cristina, being partners of prisoners throughout their incarceration and into the rebuilding of life in freedom. That same year, they moved to Novara, Oreste’s hometown. There, he resumed work as a blacksmith in the workshop he shared with his brothers, and they found a living arrangement both loved: renting a detached house surrounded by a large garden and vegetable plot, where they put down roots. The house was in Isarno, surrounded by just a few homes, a large old farmhouse (cascina), a deconsecrated chapel, a disused cemetery nearby, and endless rice fields all around.
For Oreste, the green space around their home became a liberated space to gather old friends and to intervene in the surrounding territory. Thus, in 1995, the Associazione Amici di Isarno (Friends of Isarno Association) was born, formed with old comrades from Novara and a few connections from Milan. It was a platform for action and initiatives—a sort of open-air, decentralized social center. The association successfully prevented the construction of a truck terminal near a highway junction and convinced the Ministry of Cultural Heritage (Belle Arti) and the Diocese of Novara to restore the little chapel in Isarno. Meanwhile, Oreste tried to convince us to buy small, decommissioned hydroelectric plants along rivers and streams to generate autonomous electricity using a paddle machine of his own invention.
A few years later, in 1998, a group of young comrades from Novara launched Il Cavalcavia: a social center active in Novara’s punk-rock scene until 2004. Oreste and his wife were there nearly every day. By 2000, Oreste and Thea were active in the debates and preparation for what would become the 2001 Genoa Social Forum - whose tragic outcome we all know. There were intense debates between us from Milan - who, having frequented Leoncavallo, viewed with concern the growing logic of dialogue with power (which would reveal all its deceit during the dramatic days in Genoa)—and them in Novara, who were drawn to the great potential for participation during the organizing phase, even while recognizing the dangers of a conciliatory approach.Following the State’s fascist violence, Social Forums sprung up everywhere, including Milan and Novara. In Novara, the Social Forum mobilized against Cameri, an F-35 assembly airfield not far from the city. Oreste was active before, during, and after.Meanwhile, throughout the Cavalcavia years and beyond, he was busy working in Novara and neighboring towns with self-managed DIY and flea markets. This work demanded his attention for negotiations with local municipalities over space, stall permits, organizing vendors, and managing events. Eventually, the Strano brothers' workshop closed due to retirement age. The second-hand markets took a new turn when they rented a shop in Sesto Calende, where Thea opened La soffitta della nonna (Grandma's Attic), a wonderful bric-a-brac store open from 2004 to 2010.
During those same years, relationships grew and solidified with the Social Center in Alessandria, which, among other causes, was fighting against the Terzo Valico high-speed rail line and for environmental protection. June 2, 2009, marked the national NO F-35 demonstration in Novara. Oreste and Thea actively participated in NO TAV and No Terzo Valico initiatives until at least 2018.In January 2010, several homes in Novara were occupied by evicted families. Oreste set up a Support Committee. The local municipality offered no solutions for families—some with children—thrown onto the street, even while public housing units sat empty, awaiting renovation. As in so many other municipalities, authorities preferred leaving homes vacant rather than assigning them to evicted people willing and able to carry out the repairs themselves.Over this occupation, the Municipality of Novara sued the Support Committee in 2013, putting everyone on trial. It was neither the last nor the only legal trial Oreste and Thea faced during this period; there were others for unauthorized demonstrations. With the help of their defense attorney—a friend and comrade—the trials finally concluded in 2018.
These activities were constantly interwoven with and complemented by initiatives on Palestine, a place Oreste had already visited back in the 1960s. He was thoroughly informed and documented on the Israeli occupation, having also founded a Palestine Committee supported, long before it became common, by non-Zionist Jews opposed to Israeli colonialism.
His final years were spent resting and storytelling, as old age no longer permitted the activism of his youth, but made room for friendships, reflection, social gatherings, and engaging conferences. «We are only passing through», he used to say. We remain happy for this shared passage—a long life that gave us so much.
To Oreste, with undiminished love.
