La pietà? Ridicola.

Scritto in forma di diario tra il 1919 e il 1921 e pubblicato nel ’24 in inglese, questo romanzo costò all’autore, Evgenij Ivanovič Zamjatin, la condanna a essere privato della possibilità di scrivere;

Pity? Ridiculous. Imagination?A Disease
Censorship struck We with particular force, this futuristic, far-sighted indictment of the ruthless and ever-expanding spread of the scientific organisation of labour within Soviet society.
Written in diary form between 1919 and 1921, and published in English in 1924, the novel earned its author, Yevgeny Ivanovich Zamyatin, a sentence depriving him of the possibility of writing; a punishment he himself asked Stalin to commute to exile, since it weighed on his spirit like a death sentence.
We would not be published in the Soviet Union until 1988.
In the glass-and-steel city of the One State, where the state has identified free will as the root of unhappiness, people are reduced to numbers and live in strict obedience to the authority of the Benefactor, guarantor of a mathematically calculated happiness. I simply transcribe — word for word — what was published today in the State Newspaper: «In 120 days the construction of the Integral will be completed. The great historic moment is near, when the first Integral will launch itself into the space of worlds. A thousand years ago your heroic ancestors brought the whole globe under the power of the One State. An even more glorious task awaits you: to integrate the boundless equation of the universe by means of the glass electric Integral, breathing fire. It will fall to you to bend, to the beneficent yoke of reason, the unknown beings who live on other planets, perhaps still in the wild state of complete freedom. If they do not understand that we bring them mathematically exact happiness, it is our duty to force them to be happy. But before the weapon we try the word».
Naturally, in the One State everyone votes for the Benefactor: «Tomorrow is the day of the Benefactor’s annual election. Tomorrow we shall once again entrust to the Benefactor the keys to the unshakeable treasure of our happiness. It goes without saying that these elections bear no resemblance whatsoever to the chaotic, disorganised elections of the ancients, when — absurd as it is to say — no one even knew in advance what their outcome would be. To build a state blindly, on uncalculated chance — what could be more senseless? […] We have nothing to hide and nothing to be ashamed of: we celebrate the elections openly, honestly, in the light of day. I see that everyone votes for the Benefactor, and everyone sees that I vote as well for the Benefactor — and how could it be otherwise, after all, when everyone and I are a single We? This procedure is far nobler, more sincere and more elevated than the criminals’ fearful secret of the ancients! Besides, it is far more suited to its purpose. And besides, even if one were to admit the impossible — that some dissonance might arise in the common monophony — since the Invisible Guardians are here among us, it would be easy for them at once to identify the numbers who had fallen into temptation, saving them from further missteps and saving the One State from them».
In the One State, children are conceived like animals: «I have read or heard many implausible things about the times when men lived in a savage, free state — that is, unorganised state. But this seemed to me the most implausible of all: how was it possible that the state power of that time, however embryonic, allowed people to live without anything resembling our Tables of the Law, without compulsory walks, without a precise regulation of mealtimes, and to get up and go to bed whenever they pleased? Some historians even claim that in those days the streets were lit all night long and people moved about throughout the night, on foot or by transport. […] Is it not absurd that a state (and it dared to call itself a state!) could leave sexual life entirely without control? Whoever wanted, whenever they wanted, as much as they wanted… Entirely unscientifically, like animals. And like animals, they had children blindly».
In the One State, poetry is a service to the state: «I thought: how could it be that the ancients never noticed the utter absurdity of their literature and poetry? The immense and magnificent force of the artistic word was squandered for nothing. It is simply ridiculous: everyone wrote whatever came into their head. Ridiculous and absurd, like the fact that in ancient times the sea beat passively against the shore day and night, and the millions of kilogrammetres contained in its waves served only to stir the feelings of lovers. We have drawn electricity from the amorous whisper of the waves; from the furious, roaring, slavering beast we have made a domestic animal; and in the same way the once-wild element of poetry too has been tamed and subjugated. Now poetry is no longer the intrusive whistle of a nightingale: poetry is a service to the State; poetry is utility».
In the One State, buildings have transparent walls, there is no privacy, no intimacy, and even lovemaking is governed by rigid schedules and procedures: «When I got home, I went to the office, showed the guard my pink ticket, and received permission to lower the blinds. We are granted this permission only on our designated sexual days. Normally, within our transparent walls, which seem woven from glittering air, we live always in full view, eternally bathed in light. We have nothing to hide from one another. This lightens the Guardians’ heavy and exalted task. Otherwise, who knows what might happen! Perhaps it was precisely the ancients’ strange, opaque dwellings that gave rise to their miserable cell-like psychology».
In the One State, pity is ridiculous: «At the first explosion beneath the engine tube there were about a dozen curious onlookers from our construction site — absolutely nothing remained of them, only a few fragments and some soot. I note here with pride that on this occasion the rhythm of our work did not stop for even a second and no one was frightened: we and our machines continued our rectilinear and circular motion with exactly the same precision as if nothing had happened. Ten numbers — that is only one hundred-millionth part of the mass of the One State, according to practical calculations an infinitesimal of the third order. Only the ancients knew pity, because of their poor understanding of arithmetic: we consider it ridiculous.
In the One State, imagination is a disease: «[…] you are ill. The name of this illness is: Imagination. It is a worm that carves black wrinkles into the forehead. It is a fever that drives you to run farther and farther away — even though this farther away begins where happiness ends. It is the last barricade on the road to happiness. But rejoice: it has already been blown up. The road is clear. The latest discovery of State Science is that the centre of imagination is a miserable cerebral node in the region of the pons Varoliev. With a triple application of X-rays to this node you will be freed from imagination. Forever. You are perfect, you are equal to machines, the road to happiness is one hundred per cent clear. Hurry, all of you — old and young — hurry to submit yourselves to the Great Operation. Run to the auditoriums where the Great Operation is performed. Long live the Great Operation! Long live the One State, long live the Benefactor!».
In the One State every morning millions of people rise as a single being. At one and the same hour millions begin work, and at one and the same hour they finish it. At the exact second indicated by the Table, in the One State millions of hands lift a spoon to the mouth, and at that same second they go out for a walk, or to the auditorium, or to sleep.
In the One State the dream has finally been realised of all those who have held, hold, or will hold Power in their hands: to extinguish the flame that burns in uniqueness of the individual, reducing entire populations to a terrifying single enormous Whole that not only no one contests, but from which — and here lies the rulers’ true masterstroke — the individual even draws courage: «A clear, crystalline bell at the bedside: seven o’clock, wake up. To right and left, through the glass walls, it seems to me that I see myself, my room, my clothes, my movements, repeated thousands of times. It gives you courage: you see yourself as part of an enormous, imposing Whole. Of such beauty, such perfection: no superfluous gesture, no nuance, no rupture.
